Artificial Intelligence in Pursuit of Deeper Learning (Part 1 of 2)
Tuesday July 15, 2025 10:30am - 12:00pm EDT
If our goal through the pursuit of Deeper Learning (DL) is to develop students who are active drivers of their own learning, then how can artificial intelligence (AI) act as a tool to enhance this goal? Participants will build a shared understanding of agency and its critical role in DL. Prepare to be inspired as we dissect real-world, on-the-ground applications of AI from trailblazing educators across the nation. Through a critical lens, we'll uncover precisely how these innovative integrations can either supercharge student agency or inadvertently clip its wings. Developing and Implementing a Personalized Competency-Based Education for All (Part 1 of 2)
Tuesday July 15, 2025 10:30am - 12:00pm EDT
Over the last six years Mineola has reimagined report cards, assessments, and time in the school day.  This session will focus on implementing a badging system pre-k -2 that eliminated report cards and learners understanding how and why they learn.  Badges evolved into proficiency scales grade3-6 and students maintain an ‘evidence folder’ to ‘defend’ their grade. In 7th and 8th grade we shifted to "scoreboards" which is version  of our new high school concept entitled “build your grade’.  BYOG allows student complete voice and choice over work, time and grades.  We have developed our own LMS to accomplish this initiative

This interactive workshop explores the foundational “roots” of teacher retention—core needs and supportive school culture—and the “wings” that enable teachers to thrive, innovate, and stay committed. Through data analysis, collaborative design, and hands-on activities, participants will identify and address systemic factors driving teacher turnover. They’ll develop a customized Retention Toolkit, create a roadmap for fostering a culture of belonging, and design an action plan to implement supportive, equitable strategies at their schools. Pathways to Authentic Social and Emotional Learning: Engaging Civic Education and the Seal of Civic Readiness (Part 1 of 2)
Tuesday July 15, 2025 10:30am - 12:00pm EDT
Post-COVID, school leaders, teachers, and students alike have struggled to renew and  navigate building community.  Simultaneously, as we all became more aware of our need for attuning to social-emotional learning, teachers and school leaders have begun to seek out curriculum and supportive materials that address these needs of students in an empowering and authentic way.  Civic Education and civic engagement are authentic manifestations of social-emotional learning in the K-12 classroom, when students identify a challenge in their community and attempt to design a solution to resolve it, they will have to demonstrate not only critical thinking skills and rely on interdisciplinary learning, but also tap into and grow their social and emotional skills (such as building consensus, empathy, perseverance, and trust), whether they intend to or not.
In our deep dive, school leaders will experience a truncated version of our six-step process for one of the Center for Civic Education’s flagship curricular program - Project Citizen. During our session, school leaders will identify a problem in their community that they feel strongly about cooperatively, research solutions and evaluate alternative policies that solve the problem, propose a solution in the form of a public policy proposal, and develop an action plan to enlist a government body to adopt their proposed public policy. Finally, school leaders will develop a physical portfolio to summarize their project and source materials. These will be shared in a showcase (think science fair, but for civic education). Once they are done, we will reflect on the social and emotional skills school leaders used throughout this session to move through the process and discover how they can bring this programming to their school community.
When school leaders leave, they will feel ready to bring Project Citizen to their school staff, and be able to support them in how they can implement this programming with their students and school community.

By the end, attendees will leave with new insights, practical tools, and a teacher-centered approach to making their schools places where teachers can truly spread their wings.

Pathways to Authentic Social and Emotional Learning: Engaging Civic Education and the Seal of Civic Readiness (Part 2 of 2)
Tuesday July 15, 2025 1:00pm - 2:45pm EDT

Proactive Safety: Fostering a Culture of Prevention in Schools LIMITED
Wednesday July 16, 2025 9:30am - 10:30am EDT
In order to effectively safeguard students, staff and our communities it is important to fully understand the dynamics around the threats that face schools. Currently, most efforts to combat violence in schools are “protection” and/or “preparedness” based. While these measures can certainly be effective and necessary, they are often reactionary. After each devastating violent incident at a school, it is often showcased that the perpetrator had a long and complex history of incidents that generated concern but that did not result in pro-active preventative interventions. This Den Talk will focus on understanding how individuals become radicalized, the pathway they follow towards violence and how schools can better implement prevention methodologies to get these individuals the help that they need before something tragic occurs.
