Post-COVID, school leaders, teachers, and students alike have struggled to renew and  navigate building community.  Simultaneously, as we all became more aware of our need for attuning to social-emotional learning, teachers and school leaders have begun to seek out curriculum and supportive materials that address these needs of students in an empowering and authentic way.  Civic Education and civic engagement are authentic manifestations of social-emotional learning in the K-12 classroom, when students identify a challenge in their community and attempt to design a solution to resolve it, they will have to demonstrate not only critical thinking skills and rely on interdisciplinary learning, but also tap into and grow their social and emotional skills (such as building consensus, empathy, perseverance, and trust), whether they intend to or not.
In our deep dive, school leaders will experience a truncated version of our six-step process for one of the Center for Civic Education’s flagship curricular program - Project Citizen. During our session, school leaders will identify a problem in their community that they feel strongly about cooperatively, research solutions and evaluate alternative policies that solve the problem, propose a solution in the form of a public policy proposal, and develop an action plan to enlist a government body to adopt their proposed public policy. Finally, school leaders will develop a physical portfolio to summarize their project and source materials. These will be shared in a showcase (think science fair, but for civic education). Once they are done, we will reflect on the social and emotional skills school leaders used throughout this session to move through the process and discover how they can bring this programming to their school community.
When school leaders leave, they will feel ready to bring Project Citizen to their school staff, and be able to support them in how they can implement this programming with their students and school community.
